Established in 1985, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) School of Nursing is one of the firsts to run undergraduate nursing education in China (known as the Advanced Nursing Department of Shanghai Second Medical University before 2005). The School of Nursing started the graduate program leading to a Master of Science in Nursing in 2003. In 2011, the School is also among the firsts that were authorized to offer doctoral degree in nursing in 2011. In 2013, an interdisciplinary postdoctoral research station in basic medicine - nursing was established. In 2020, Nursing specialty was selected as one of the national first-class undergraduate majors. In 2022, the School began to run Nursing + Administration Dual Degree Program. In 2023, a postdoctoral research station in nursing was approved.
As a nursing discipline of a first-class university, it has always adhered to the school-running orientation of being "internationally renowned and domestically first-class", possessing a complete talent training system including undergraduate, master's, doctoral and postdoctoral levels. With this support, the School of Nursing is growing fast with clear goals, strong specialties, excellent faculties, and remarkable achievements. The School of Nursing has made huge progress towards becoming a nationally and internationally renowned nursing school. It has entered the ranks of advantageous disciplines in the fifth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education.
The SJTU School of Nursing has 79 full-time and part-time faculties, among whom 68 hold senior professional titles. There are 40 faculty members with overseas study experiences. It has 39 postgraduate supervisors, including 10 doctoral supervisors.There is 1 "Yangtze River Scholar" Distinguished Professor at the Ministry of Education. There are 3 fellows of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), 5 among the top 100 national nursing experts in academic influence, and 1 associate editor of the top nursing journal (Int J Nurs Stud) (the only one in China) and other high-level talents. There is 1 vice chairman of the Nursing Professional Certification Work Committee of the Ministry of Education, 1 vice chairman of the Chinese Nursing Association and 1 chairman of the Shanghai Nursing Association, and 12 chairmen/vice chairmen of the special committees of the Chinese Nursing Association.
The school has 25 national and Chinese Nursing Association educational practicing bases and 54 municipal nursing specialty training bases. It has the Shanghai Public Health Emergency Reserve Team Training Center and the Nursing Sub-center of the Clinical Research Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.
In recent years, the school has continuously strengthened the connotation construction of first-class majors, and the talent training has achieved remarkable results. The graduates have received several honors, such as the "National Key Team of Shanghai College Students' Summer Social Practice" and the "Second Prize" of the 2023 "Zhixing Cup" Shanghai College Students' Social Practice Competition.The student association "Jiang Xin" Drama Club has been awarded as an energetic club in Shanghai universities. The original sitcom has won the "Excellent Performance Team Award" of the 17th Shanghai College Students' Drama Festival, realizing the synchronization of art exhibition activities and curriculum ideological and political work. In the past three years, nursing students have won many honors such as the "High-Quality Dissertation Award for Nursing Postgraduates in China", the "Excellence Award" of the National Medical Virtual Simulation Experiment Innovation Competition, and the "Winning Award" of the 2022 International Nursing Skills Competition.
The school attaches great importance to teaching reform and quality connotation construction. Many courses have won titles such as "National High-Quality Online Open Courses", "Shanghai First-Class Undergraduate Courses", "Shanghai Municipal Key Courses in Colleges and Universities", and "Shanghai Municipal Demonstrative Undergraduate Classrooms". The faculties of the School of Nursing edited 2 national planning textbooks. The 4th edition “Health Assessment” (associate editor, ranked 3rd) edited by the faculty of the School of Nursing won the second prize of the National Excellent Textbook Award. The school has won 2 Shanghai Jiao Tong University teaching achievement awards, and has obtained projects such as the "Shanghai Municipal Key Undergraduate Teaching Reform Project" and the "Shanghai Course Ideological and Political Demonstration Course and Demonstration Team".
The school has continuously strengthened the capacity building of the teaching staff. Faculities have won many honors such as the second prize of the "Second National College Teachers' Teaching Innovation Competition", the second prize of the "Fifth National College Hybrid Teaching Design Innovation Competition", and the first prize of the "Shanghai College Course Ideological and Political Teaching Case Exhibition Activity".
In the past five years, the School of Nursing has had more than 20 national and provincial-level scientific research projects approved, obtained more than 100 national patents, published over 1,000 papers in important domestic and foreign journals, and won more than 50 awards at all levels.
The school actively builds an international exchange platform, initiates brand projects such as "Overseas Scholar Online Sessions" and "International Young Scholar Forum", promotes cooperation with first-class institutions in countries such as Singapore, the UK, and Australia, expands and implements student and scholars visiting programs, and cultivates innovative nursing talents with an international perspective.
The school focuses on improving the level of social services and the school's reputation. As the main implementing unit, jointly with 12 affiliated hospitals, it has formed a 3000-person "nursing reserve team" for public health emergency response to safeguard urban public health. Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Nursing and the Shanghai Nursing Association have jointly held the Shanghai International Stoma Therapist Training Course for 17 years, cultivating a large number of professional stoma therapy nursing talents in China. The school and the Shanghai Health Promotion Center have successfully held the "Health Listen to 'Nursing' - Shanghai's First Nursing Science Popularization Competition", creating a nursing science popularization brand.
