2023 Ottawa Summer School - week 4

The four-week summer school comes to an end, let's take a look at what the ‘little parrots’ have gained this week!

Psychology(PSY)

In this wonderful journey of learning, we have finally arrived at the last week of our psychology course. Looking back at the days gone by, it feels like we've traversed the labyrinth of the mind, gathering countless precious knowledge and experiences.

Throughout our past four-week’s studies, we focused on the evolution of the field of psychotherapy. It has been a twisty and captivating journey. From ancient healers to cutting-edge modern techniques, we've witnessed humanity's relentless pursuit of mental well-being. And this week, we delved into various treatments for different psychological disorders, ranging from psychotherapy to biomedical approaches like frontal lobotomy, and even into the mechanisms behind various medications, understanding how they adjust neurotransmitters to alleviate symptoms like depression and anxiety.

This learning process is more than just piling up knowledge; it's a reflection on our humanity and a demonstration of our care for the mind. We've learned to empathize with others' inner world and use scientific methods to help them navigate their challenges.

The upcoming final exam is an opportunity for us to showcase what we've learned. With the knowledge and wisdom, we've gained, we'll step confidently into the exam room, using our pens to express our understanding and passion for psychology. Regardless of the outcome, we've already gained so much. We've grown during this learning journey, nurturing our professional skills and fostering a spirit of continuous learning. Let's embrace the new challenges ahead with this wealth of knowledge and steadfast confidence, creating a brighter future.

Anthropology(ANT)

The ANT courses this week were wonderful. Through reading reference materials and watching podcasts on historical events, we gained an understanding of political societies with different cultural backgrounds, which gave us an impressed understanding of human society. This has also made us start to think about the impact of political factors in the medical field on medical decision-making and health policies. A lecture titled "The political perspective: Symbols in Politics", which provided us with a deeper understanding of the use of symbols in historical events and how performances and symbols affect people's thoughts and attitudes. This made us reflect on how to use symbols to convey health information in the medical field and how to better communicate with patients.

Through this week's study, we have experienced the vastness and depth of anthropology, as well as the close connection between medicine, politics, and language. Although we still have a long way to go in the field of medicine, this study tour experience has given us a clearer understanding of our future direction. We hope to integrate anthropological perspectives into our medical practice, providing patients with more comprehensive care and treatment.

English(ESL)

The fourth week of ESL English class was full of challenges, students in Saba’s class reported on the results of their research project, which was also the final exam for the parrots this semester. After careful preparation from everyone, the students confidently walked before the podium and spoke freely, achieving great success. In order to increase the fun of the presentation, the students also specially created a Kahoot quiz, allowing everyone present to share their knowledge gains in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.

Teacher David used a presentation to test the results of learning English in the past twelve classes. Teacher David taught us in the first three weeks how to accurately pronounce, confidently deliver a speech, reject invalid sounds, and make eye contact. From the last three minutes of the presentation, I felt the improvement in my classmates' English-speaking skills, able to overcome inner tension, and fluently express objective facts and opinions in English in public. Finally, Teacher David will also provide us with feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of the final speech through email. I believe that after four weeks of happy learning with Teacher David, this time will definitely stay in the deep memory of my classmates.

Departure Ceremony

Focusing on the final exams, we didn’t realize the whole journey was about to end, but the departure ceremony was on schedule. Senior Manager Meghan Hach, teacher Desiree and Li Chen from IGHO, teacher David and Professor Joannie Jean came to say goodbye to us.

Teacher Desiree reviewed the summer school in detail with us. Every one of us had a fruitful and enjoyable summer, whether in terms of learning and life experience. In the ‘Photo Journal’ section, every one of us showed our favorite photos that froze the unforgettable moments. Each photo records the shining moments of the little parrots in Ottawa and splendid natural views and colorful cultural lives of Canada. Then, teacher Desiree asked us to draw our ‘summer school impressions’ in small groups. We drew different pictures, and shared one of our most special and memorable events.

At the end of the departure ceremony, each student was awarded a certificate of completion for the summer school program by the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, making a successful conclusion to the four-week study.
