As we enter the second week of our study abroad program, the students have fully adapted to the local lifestyle and schedule. After last week's study and examination, everyone is much more accustomed to the academic life at the University of Ottawa. Anthropology(ANT) This week in the Anthropology (ANT) course, besides attending lectures, we had the opportunity for group case studies and presentations. We were divided into seven groups and randomly assigned a case to research. After preparing for two days, we culminate in presentations on Friday. In the case presentations of the seven groups, we have seen the complex ethical issues that arose in scientific practice, and the process of researchers in various fields constantly exploring in practice and establishing ethical principles. The students vividly presented the contents of different cases, the ethical issues involved, and their own thinking in a variety of ways. In the process of case sharing, the understanding of ethical issues has been deepened, and the openness and comprehensiveness of thinking has been broadened. This course structure allowed us to internalize the knowledge imparted by the teacher and also provided a chance for externalization through practical research on specific topics, enriching everyone's learning experience. Psychology(PSY) In our psychology class, we have learned many fascinating facts that were previously only found in extracurricular readings. For example, how infants think, what constitutes personality, and the works of prominent figures like Freud and Piaget. Through Dr. Baird's engaging lectures, we have had the opportunity to engage in conversations with renowned masters of psychology, gaining a scientific perspective on consciousness and cognition. English(ESL) In the English class, the students are divided into two small groups.Professor Saba is humorous and witty, engaging in discussions with the students about medical-related topics or Canadian social situations. In each session, we improve our listening skills through audio and video materials, and the professor also provides each student with opportunities to answer questions to practice our speaking abilities. She systematically guides us in writing essays, from researching the topics to presenting the papers, enabling us to have a clearer grasp of essay writing techniques. During the discussion on mental health topics, Professor Saba made use of Kahoot, a DIY quiz game platform, to get everyone involved. As seen in the picture, we participated in a lively quiz competition using our smartphones to answer the questions. If we responded quickly and accurately, we earned high scores. To encourage competitiveness, the quiz also displayed rankings. In terms of classroom effectiveness, the Kahoot quiz was indeed captivating and served as a motivating tool. Lecturer Saba also suggested that if we wanted more people to participate in our presentations, we could use Kahoot during the final week. This class was impressive, dynamic, fun-filled, and enriched with knowledge. The course taught by Professor David is one of the most interactive courses. In class, Professor David encouraged us to listen and speak more by means of free communication in groups, short personal sharing, sentence making, word guessing games, reading training, etc., so as to improve our self-confidence and oral communication ability in practice. In the spare time, the teacher also chatted with us about the daily life in Canada and hobbies, recommended many travel options to us, and provided many practical suggestions for us to fully enjoy the time in Canada and fully experience the life in Canada. After-school activity As our familiarity with Ottawa grows, we have started exploring and broadening our horizons through various activities and trips. Some students made an in-depth exploration in Ottawa and had a fulfilling weekend. The dazzling Parliament Hill light show, the exhilarating flight experience at the Aviation Museum, cycling along the Ottawa River, and the vibrant night markets all hinted at the diverse and colorful weekend life. |
