2023 Ottawa Summer School - week 1

Departure

After more than 2 months waiting for visa, and with the full assistance of the University of Ottawa, 33 “Parrots”of OSJSM 2027 finally boarded their flight to Canada on July 8th, marking the first on-person summer school since the pandemic!

Orientation & Campus tour

On the first day of campus life at the UOttawa, the teachers prepared a warmly orientation ceremony for us. They introduced us to all aspects of campus life, and familiarized us with the campus website and health services. After enjoying the lunch, we had a campus tour with a friendly student volunteer of uOttawa. She took us to all corners of the campus and  introduced us to the daily campus life in uOttawa. In the afternoon, the teachers from the library explained to us the use of library resources and literature search tools.

The vice Dean, who delivered a welcome speech in fluent Chinese, the energetic student volunteer, the humorous library management teachers and the warm hearted IGHO teachers…All kinds of heart-warming details left a deep impression on the students. The whole day's immersive experience has given everyone a fresh understanding of Ottawa and the University of Ottawa, and give us a lot of expectations for the next course!


Lectures

During the four-week study in uOttawa, we are taking 3 courses which are anthropology, psychology and English. Anthropology, as a subject focusing on social science, is quite distinct from natural science which we are studying in Shanghai. Studying it well is full of challenges. Professors in uOttawa have great enthusiasm in teaching and use examples to help us understand new concepts. They also encourage us to discuss in class to inspire thoughts and deepen our understanding of the knowledge.


Cooking

Thanks to the well-equipped kitchen in the dormitory, through a week of independent living experience, we make a spurt of progress on our cooking skills. This should also be another kind of benefits for us from the summer school.
